Here are three excerpts from the poem \'Situations\' which was included in my collection \'The Body of Air\' privately published in 1966.The evening bell tolling tolling tolling\nand the weary westward wayfaring sun.\nThe evening mists, the cautious chill of wind,\nand many many memories of you.\nAdjust the broken lace, adjust the gown,\naddress yourself to moving further on\nand without purpose walk into the setting sun.\nDissolving in the shower, beneath the trees,\nbowing at the gateway, silent, proud,\nthe evening air, confusion spreading wide,\nthe mists descending, cold and clammy clothes,\nthe innocence that wavered and has passed,\ndisruption of the meaning and the word.\nAnd all has come together, gathered here,\nand clamours at the gateway and retracts,\nconfounds the issue, disqualifies the sense.\n\n\n\nIn this palace, at the height of summer\n(cool marble of the flesh and of the floor)\nincessant voices twist and turn in air\nor heap upon the noontide and the night\nor slither, stirring, in the silent weeded pools.\nThe people ofthe palace turn and stare\nand move their sightless eyes upon the scene\nbut cannot find the substance of the voice\nor intimate the word which they have heard.\nThe voices of the birds and of the beasts\nbeat against the gate and sway the trees\naimlessly haunt the margin of the pool\nbut never enter themagic circled square\nwhere men and women lighted by the moon\nwander the leaf-strewn mazy paths \nbut cannot reach the hidden central hub.\ntrue axis of the turning suns, the moving pole which runs from star to star. The royal chariot glitters in the sun.\nThe foolish feast their eyes upon its wealth\nbut men of wisdom, quietly passing by,\nare gazing on the chariot in their hearts\nand gazing on the splendid charioteer who,\nthough not an earthly king possessed of gold,\nhas more of wealth than any king on earth.Above the tumult of the palanquin,\nremoved far off from arrows and from war,\nabove the court of kings (bejewelled men)\nand far into the ether and the air\nthe little ba, on wings of spirit form,\nunbodied in a body pure as dawn,\npartaking of the clarity of dawn,\nin silent tumult, in concentred thought,\nwrapped about in rays of sun and dew\nand steaming up as dew itself will steam,\nconcerted dew that rises to a head;\nand fanning out above in rainbow forms\n(the pliant platform whence the journey starts);\nthe rainbows back are bended, arching low,\nthe ba has taken place; and then is fired,\nin ecstacy, in ecstacy in fired\nand wings its swiftened way towards the sun.
